Attending a Networking Event When You'd Rather Stay Home  E-mail

Have you ever found yourself sitting in your office or at home, or
maybe already in the car, just dreading the thought of attending a
networking event you have on your calendar?  You're not alone!
Even we, the Networking Gurus, have had similar thoughts.
Should you just stay home or turn the car around and pass up the
event or should you figure out a way to attend anyway?  You
probably think we're going to say, of course, you should go.  Not
so fast.  The answer is, it depends.  There may be a great reason
not to attend, or you may just be making an excuse.  Only you can
determine whether you're making an excuse or giving a reason.

"It's snowing" may be a great reason if there's a blizzard and may
be an excuse if there are a few inches on the ground.  Statements
like, My favorite show is on tonight; I'm too tired; I don't feel
like it; I won't know anyone there
sound like excuses.
If you're using an excuse, we recommend you attend the event and
find a way to make it enjoyable.  Enter with a positive frame of
mind or you might as well stay home.

Here are 8 ways to make it easier to go to an event even when you
think you'd rather not.
1.  Call a friend and ask him/her to go with you or meet you there.

2.  Imagine the great people you are going to meet.

3.  Think about connecting with friends/acquaintances/colleagues
     you haven't seen in awhile.

4.  Set an intention for how you want the event to go for you.

5.  Re-connect with the reason you signed up for the event in the
     first place.

6.  If you've had a rough day, re-focus and use the event to forget
about it for a few hours.

7.  Make a list of all the good things that might happen by going.

8.  Ask what you're saying yes to when you say yes to going.  You
may be saying yes to keeping your commitments, yes to meeting
new people, yes to growing your business or furthering your career,
yes to stretching out of your comfort zone, yes to feeling good about

The next time you find yourself thinking, "No, I don't want to go,"
use one of our tips and change that into "Yes, I will go, and I
will have fun!"
